A titan among rock bands, Deep Purple will always be closely associated with Montreux and were the number one choice to close the 40th Festival in 2006. They responded with a fantastic performance, their set blending classic Purple numbers such as Strange Kind Of Woman, Highway Star, Black Night and, of course, Smoke On The Water, with songs from their recent Rapture Of the Deep album and more. Available for the first time as a combined CD and DVD release (complete with 12-page booklet), the latter also includes interviews with all five band members.
REVIEWS
"This spirited hybrid affair celebrates the festival’s 40th anniversary; the band’s entire set on DVD and in edited form on CD. Smoking, indeed."

MOJO
"They hit their stride on the home straight, thundering through the likes of Space Truckin’, Highway Star and (on the DVD only) Black Night with multiple solos - some stirring, some stilted - and plenty of good-natured muscle. Preceding Smoke on the Water, Paice and Airey even do a piano-and-brushes swing-jazz intro that’s cheeky, cheery and slightly baffling, before Steve Morse brings in the dumb, brilliant riff that launched a thousand rip-offs. ’It was only just down the road,’ mutters Gillan, almost poignantly, as rock history celebrates itself."

Classic Rock
"The Deep Purple release sees the band revisiting the Swiss town that inspired their legendary track Smoke on the Water, giving an inspired performance that includes Strange Kind of Woman, Highway Star and, what else, Smoke on the Water."
Choice Magazine
"With a nod to the nature of the festival where they’re appearing, there’s a brilliant ’cocktail jazz’ preamble to Smoke on the Water, of all things. The lyrics of the song immortalised the festival’s supremo Funky Claude - who’s among the guests taking the stage towards the end of Purple’s set."
