American folk music is an incredibly broad subject and can be used to describe all manner of music making. Some would suggest it starts with Native American powwow and flute music. Others would look at the songs sung by cowboys and blackface minstrels in the 19^th Century. Moving into the 20^th Century, folk music is often claimed to be the recordings made in the 1920s and 1930s of blues and hillbilly musicians. With this double CD compilation we attempt to cover the music made by a variety of musicians who, from the 1930s through to the 1960s, were often celebrated as representing American folk music.

Dust Bowl Blues gathers more than a dozen of the most influential American folk musicians of the 20th Century. From Woody Guthrie and Lead Belly’s pioneering WW2-era recordings to the huge pop stardom of The Weavers, Harry Belafonte and Joan Baez, this double album displays the rich roots and fertile musical offspring that went on to change both popular music and the world.
