From the assured piano of George Shearing at Midnight On Cloud 69 through to the mellow magic of guitarist Kenny Burrell’s Listen To The Dawn, Jazz After Dark takes us through the night with the soundtrack to that period in America, particularly during the 1950s, when the world seemed a much more relaxed place. Immaculately executed jazz was the favoured backdrop of the time for those of cultivated taste, with preference given to tuneful compositions designed for peaceful pleasure over harsh sounds likely to disturb the comfortable atmosphere. It required the very finest musicians to succeed at this level of sophistication without sounding bland, and the Savoy Records’ artist roster contained precisely the right practitioners.
