Souther started out in the band Longbranch Pennywhistle, before moving on to country-rock ‘supergroup’ The Souther-Hillman-Furay Band with Chris Hillman of Byrds fame and Richie Furay of Poco. At one time he rehearsed with The Eagles, but turned down the offer to join as a full member, and instead helped to pen some of their most well known tracks. Souther’s songs have also been covered by Bonnie Raitt, Roy Orbison, James Taylor, Crosby Stills & Nash and Joe Cocker.
“J.D. was the primary creative force behind Eagles songs such as ‘The Best of My Love’ and ‘New Kid In Town’.”~ Don Henley, Grammy Award winning musician and founding member of The Eagles
Lesser known than his contemporaries the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt, both of whom benefited greatly from his songwriting abilities, JD Souther nevertheless was a key player in the LA music scene of the mid 60’s to early 70’s.~As Christopher Silvester from The Sunday Times puts it, Souther was one of the “Various individuals [who] were regarded as pivotal or influential, even if less commercially successful”.~
Having shied away from media exposure for most of his career, Souther featured heavily in Barney Hoskyns’s recent ‘Hotel California’ book about this scene and also in the subsequent BBC4 documentary of the same name.~ Both book and documentary stressed the importance that JD played within this movement and as a result, he is now beginning to receive the critical acclaim that he truly deserves.
This new compilation contains 18 tracks from his 5 solo albums and the 2 albums from Souther Hillman Furay Band and runs for more than 70 mins. His catalogue has been unavailable in the UK for many years.
He’s rarely played live over the last twenty years, and he starts his first UK tour in support of this album on 21 September – see dates below. Expectation is high that the album and tour can tap into the millions of Eagles fans who have enjoyed his songwriting over the years.
