Liza has always been a most versatile artist as this collection shows. She has stayed true to her own style and responded to changes in popular culture at the same time.  She’s an innovator and a true original and Liza can do pop & the popular song effortlessly. ‘Cabaret… And All That Jazz’ is a tremendous 2 disc compilation that embraces Liza Minnelli as pop star, chanson, cabaret queen, movie star and disco goddess. The breadth of material present is phenomenal and it’s a collection littered with gems: songs from the classic ‘Liza With A Z’ album; the synth-pop greatness of her work with the Pet Shop Boys on the album ‘Results’ with that wonderful cover of Stephen Sondheim’s ‘Losing My Mind’ (UK Chart #6); the Charles Aznavour penned ‘There Is A Time’; a really great take on Bill Wither’s ‘Use Me’ from 1973’s ‘The Singer’ album that some of London’s cooler funk DJs were dropping back in the 90s at seminal clubs like The Wag; the Studio 54 (where Liza would hold court with Andy Warhol) influenced strut of ‘Jimi Jimi’ from 1977’s ‘Tropical Nights’, right through to Liza’s signature tune ‘New York, New York’ from the Martin Scorsese film of the same name that she made her own.

It’s an extraordinary collection taking in the top moments from her Pet Shop Boys-produced Results set from 1989 and diversions into disco on the likes of Tropical Nights/ Bali Ha’i. It encompasses groovy covers of Where Is the Love?, Oh Babe What Would You Say?, You Are the Sunshine of My Life and the spectacular Use Me, which had a rare-groove style rebirth a few years back. She turns smoky chanteuse on Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight. The live disc shows her on fire in her natural habitat, giving you the full dimensions of the Minnelli experience.

Despite initial reservations of where half the Cabaret soundtrack is (thankfully we’re spared the Sex and the City 2-stealing turn of Beyoncé’s Single Ladies) and the fact that this anthology is shorn of all the real drama of her turbulent life, it is a spot-on summation of an icon’s work which also manages to unearth the odd gem in the process.
