Founded in 1953, the Drifters updated the American vocal group tradition begun by minstrel shows, gospel groups and barbershop quartets and continued by the Mills Brothers and the Ink Spots. Their soulful sound, sculpted by producer/songwriters Leiber and Stoller and delivered by the likes of Ben E.
