The Perfect Song is the first collaboration between Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Leslie Bricusse (Doctor Dolittle, Goodbye Mr Chips, Hook and many other hit musicals)

Michael Ball reveals how Michael Caine inspired the Perfect Song while at a 10 Downing Street party - as told by Michael Ball to Steve Wright on Radio 2: “I was at another do, as you do, it’s Christmas etc, I was telling Andrew Lloyd Webber that I had a song for the album that Tim Rice had written. He says “I’ve just written a song and you should have it. It’s a fabulous story”, he says “I was in L.A last week for Leslie Bricusse’s 82nd birthday”, this is Andrew Lloyd Webber talking to me, I’m in Downing Street actually and the story gets bigger. Andrew goes on “And Michael Caine says to Leslie and I, have you never written a song together and we thought this was a great idea. So Andrew asks Leslie for a song title, Leslie have him the title ‘The Perfect Song’. Andrew left the party, sat in a cab and wrote the song, and sent it over to Leslie, Leslie wrote a lyric.
