The musical is a timeless thing and a moving feast, forever changing with public taste. What we think of today as a musical evolved from other theatrical forms back in the nineteenth century when Gilbert and Sullivan brought to the London stage a set of light-weight comic operas which found worldwide success equivalent to any Andrew Lloyd Webber show of today. They themselves were influenced by a number of things such as continental operettas, the burlesques of serious pieces, the popular songs of the music hall and topical ones of the pantomime. Add the important element of dance and the end product was soon to be the Musical.

Our collection picks up the story of the musical in the latter part of the last century when it had become an accepted theatrical form on both sides of the Atlantic. Both London’s West End and New York’s Broadway have introduced new musicals for over a century and with the advent of sound the cinema also discovered them.
